Home Owner Association (HOA) fees exorbitant!?

Our Board just raised the fee by $70 to over $420 a month! I think this is exorbitant, considering we have 1 unheated pool and a single crappy tennis court as our “amenities”. Problem is, they don’t communicate with the community or let anyone know what’s going on, aside from posting a tiny sign no one sees. How can we stop them?
with the mortgage, property taxes, cost of living AND the new HOA fee, we’re wondering if we can continue to live here– but who will want to buy our unit with these rates?
California.
PS- final thought- my husband ran for and won a seat on the board because of these issues, so we ARE involved, they just dismiss everything that doesn’t come from their 4 “best friend” members. He’s been trying so hard, and even as a board member, they go behind his back, too.

Home owners association?

We live in a community of about 45 homes. The original developer put into place a covenance, about 8 yrs ago. It said that after 75% of the homes were sold that we could start a HOA. We have no community pool, tennis courts or anything like that. Only a small community sign and a little bit of grass that needs to be cut. According to the covenance they need 10 homeowners to form the HOA, But they can’t make any changes until dec. 31st 2008, or unless 2/3 of the homeowners agree to any of the changes.

My question is should we even form one, and if so can they collect dues without 2/3 of the homeowners agreeing. Currently our covenance does not cover anything about dues.

Any suggestions or tips would be great.

Thanks

I feel like our condo association is taking advantage of us. What steps can I take to resolve it!?

Every year that I’ve been in my condo, the fees have gone up. First it was 243/mo, then 263, and now it’s 279! We do not have a pool, tennis court, or gym. Yes, some renovations were done but I still think they’re getting over on us. Are there rules as to how many meetings we should have?? Because it seems that they only hold ONE meeting maybe two per year. Where can I find these “rules”? (Note: We live in Northern Virginia near DC) Please help, I’d like to take action but have NO clue where to begin. Is this normal?? Thank you everyone!

Why are women’s organizations called women (then the association)?

why don’t they just call them lady (then association? ex: Ladies tennis club)
Is that the international trend?

How do I fight reverse age discrimination by my homeowners association?

My fiance and I recently moved into a condo in Scottsdale. We are 32 yrs old. Most residents are 60+ yrs old.

For several months we’ve been subjected to continual harrassment by the HOA board president. She patrols the complex daily & individually directs the management company’s actions. So far, I’ve had:

- My residence status challenged on several occasions (“do you really live here?”) when playing tennis;

- My portable tennis ball machine (and me) accused of damaging the antiquated tennis court (which is false);

- My brother-in-law & his kids chased out of the community park for playing wiffle ball (“We just put in new grass” – false – “it’s not allowed” – also false)

Two days ago, she jumped in front of my friend’s moving car & accused him of speeding. She berated him for his “fast car” & then threatened to fine me! I just received the “violation” letter.

This is not a 55+ community, but the board president is making us feel unwelcome. What can we do to fight back?
